Glam Slam Comes To A Poetic Ending

Posted by Michael Musto at 3:27 PM, July 1, 2008

Look closely, dears. This is what three generations of loveliness look like: Flotilla DeBarge, moi, and Emanuel Xavier. The photo was taken at the Glam Slam, a spoken word contest at Bowery Poetry Club, courtesy of Emanuel's House of Xavier. (Flotilla and I judged, holding up scores and finger snaps. Despite the power rush—and the constant flow of erotic poetry—we stayed dry and objective.) I've done this gig many times before, but this year—the last one before the event takes off for the UK—seemed extra looney and special. For example, the "loss poem in blue" category brought out a weirdo who screamed drug regimens and time announcements in between railing about "Angela" Jolie. Later, we realized he'd interpreted loss as in "lost my mind." Brilliant! There was also a Jamaican guy who dropped his pants and kept chanting about how his sperm had turned blue. We took his word for it. At other times in the night, Flotilla cleansed the crowd's palette with a brilliant Macy Gray impression; MC Mother Diva Xavier emitted nonstop verbal hilarity; and one of the finalists began a poem with "Lick it!...Did I stutter?" The limeys have no idea what they're in for.

Brittany Lynn: A Drag Discovery Outside New York

Posted by Michael Musto at 3:00 PM, June 26, 2008

New York is the drag capital of the world—especially when you look at some of those surgerized Upper East Side women—but there are tuckers and pluckers elsewhere around the globe too! Like in Philadelphia, where Brittany Lynn (aka 6' 4" Ian Morrison) kicks ass as a drag star who helps ease the pain of what's lately been called Kill-adelphia. Last year, Brittany hosted the Mr. Gay Philadelphia pageant which I happened to judge and might just do again if the stars (and my balls) properly align. And last week, I caught her act in an wonderfully divey Atlantic City hangout called the West Side Bar & Lounge (not to be confused with our own West Side club. There, no one wears a towel and throws their legs up in the air—not till 3 a.m. anyway.)

Brittany barrels out singing "Sweet Transvestite"—yes, really singing—and proceeds to emit a steady stream of verbiage about all the important high-toned topics like uncut dicks and head cheese. Backed by two cutely awkward gogo pubes, she then lipsynchs your favorite TV Land jingles and commercials, and ends by chasing a black girl around the room while mouthing the inevitable Dreamgirls ballad.

Unlike other drag queens who fall apart between songs, this one can keep up the energy and the sass. Let's all chip in and bring her to Gotham for a month!

Late Gay Rocker Dean Johnson Gets a Musical Weenie Roast

Posted by Michael Musto at 3:00 PM, May 28, 2008

Dean Johnson was just another 6' 6" bald drag queen in drop earrings chanting, "Fuck third world genocide!" A legend in the gay rock scene, Dean would have been 47 this Friday, so his friends and costars have assembled to stage a birthday celebration slash benefit concert that night at Don Hill's (511 Greenwich Street) to keep his memory as tall as he was. Members of Dean's two bands, The Weenies and The Velvet Mafia will take the stage, fronted by guest stars from Justin Bond to Bebe Buell and beyond. So come and see why the Weenies had such a big Johnson.

The Cockettes are Coming Back-ette at Ya!

Posted by Michael Musto at 1:30 PM, May 20, 2008

Sometimes I just want to run a press release, not because I'm lazy—well, not JUST because I'm lazy—but because it tells you all you need to know about the subject at hand, including lots of names upon names of esoteric people who mean so very much yet are best listed in the format of a release written by somebody else. So click here, honey. and you'll get all the info (and names) you need about an upcoming event celebrating the Cockettes, the '60s-and-beyond San Francisco-based bearded drag group of glitter icons. Totally Greek to you, as it were? Shush! Throw on some quick gender-fuck drag, click on the release, and learn it.

The Northeast Radical Faeries and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence Present The Cockettes Are Coming: An Extravaganza to Benefit Faerie Camp Destiny—one of a series of events in New York the first week in June which will bring a dozen of the original Cockettes together on the East Coast for the first time since 1971 to mark the donation of the Martin Worman Cockettes/Gay Theater Archives to the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Billy Rose Theater Division at Lincoln Center.
The Cockettes Are Coming! promises to be a family reunion of generations of downtown theater people from old friends of the 19601s to today's most creative artists and performers.
From pre-Cockette days will be Theater for the New City's Crystal Field and the Harris Family, whose son and brother Hibiscus founded the Cockettes and Angels of Light. Living Theatre members will perform a witches' cabaret as The Wycherlies. Agosto Machado, Chris Tanner, and Lance Cruce, the hilarious and insightful Reno, and Radical Faeries Agnes De Garron and Gabriel Q will delight with their wit, wisdom and artistry.

Musical wonders Steve Sandberg and Cyrus Baty, video artist Bec Stupak, neo-Voguing dancers The Pixie Harlots, wordsmith and poet Brandon Olson, and the seductive Taylor Mac will showcase a new generation of performers.

Faerie photography and video by Keith Gemerek, Jim Jackson, David Finkelstein, and Richard Mitchell.

The evening will be hosted by London's fabulous La John Joseph. Expect many glamorous surprises!

Monday, June 2. Performances at 8 p.m. Theater for the New City, 155 First Avenue at 10th Street.

A Letter From Drag Star Epiphany

Posted by Michael Musto at 9:00 AM, May 14, 2008

A Letter From Drag Star Epiphany . . .

"Hi Michael:

So I wanted to clear the air about my departure from the withering 'Hot Mess' party [Sundays at Porky's]. I saw it written in some gay rag that I was fired for stealing money. Actually, I was the first of a long list of people to quit the party. Acid Betty, Logan, Preston, and now James Coppola have quit without getting paid. That almost happened to me too, but I went into the register and got my pay before leaving."

So before you all call someone a hot mess for getting out of Hot Mess, please check out the REASONS why they went into the register.

The Gay Oscars Have Been Announced: What a Pill!

Posted by Michael Musto at 12:00 PM, April 16, 2008

BEST DRAG: Peppermint, "Servin It Up"

I just woke up from Sunday night and realized I was a presenter at the Pill awards! No, these aren’t honors for the best developments in Xanax, Prozac, and Zoloft (though the winners’ names were lodged in large pills). They were awards given by ADD-TV—a queer showcase on Channel 34, run by George Lyter—for the most attention-getting, most state of the art, and most gay-gay-gay videos out there in the gayosphere. The bustling backstage area at Arena deserved an award in itself. It was filled with pier queens, barely clad male models (there was a life-changing fashion show halfway through the awards), and trannie lookalikes of Paris Hilton. I was so happy I didn't even need my pills. Onstage, some of the announced winners were:

BEST DRAG
Peppermint - "Servin It Up"

SEXY PILL
Jonny McGovern - "Something For the Fellas" -

BEST PARODY
"Bottum" - JB Ghuman

VIRGIN Pill (BEST NEWCOMER)
Colton Ford - "The Way You Love Me"

BEST WHITE TRASH/GHETTO
Black Peter Group -"Peter Vs. Robot" -

BEST ANIMATION/FX
Ari Gold - "Where The Music Takes You"

BEST MUSIC VIDEO (POP)
Adam Joseph "You're Mine"

BEST MUSIC VIDEO - (ALTERNATIVE)
Matthew Duffy #1 Enemy" -
