Meryl Streep Tries to Go Down on a Banana!

Categories: Meryl Streep

In her illustrious career, Meryl Streep has played every type of human and accent under the sun, but I've always thought, "And yet she's never tried to go down on a banana! On screen anyway!"

But now she has attempted it.

"Meryl's A Terrible Neighbor" Say The Whiners

Sour grapes make for flat champagne once again.

Bitter neighbors in Salisbury, Connecticut, are claiming that Meryl Streep is more "Nasty Lady" than "Iron Lady."

According to this write-up, "She lives on a very big multimillion dollar property in the area, but she doesn't give back."

We've already seen Mamie Gummer in plays, movies, and TV shows.

But her 24-year-old sister Grace Gummer is relatively new to me, so I was curious to see her in a supporting role in the new revival of Tom Stoppard's Arcadia.

And she's good!

Grace has her mother's (and sister's) face, but her own charm, doing well as an 18-year-old who veers between spouting her ideas on a Newtonian universe and having sex with a literary professor played by Billy Crudup.

No, she may not be as sizzling as James Franco's brother, lol, but give her time.

The determinism drama itself is as dry and and witty and long and trying as ever.

The set's bare walls are no doubt a result of the fact that they have to represent two different centuries, but I have another theory.

Talented Tony winner Crudup is so over-the-top and self-consciously cute, he's clearly chewed up the scenery! I found him pretty unbearable, I have to admit.

Or maybe he's just responding to some preview complaints about the show's audibility. If that's the case, Billy, we hear you! Take it down a notch!

Celebs Who've Never Gotten Into Trouble

meryl-streep.jpg
Are there any big names who've never made a huge, public mess of themselves?

Who've never been caught doing drugs, engaging in a DUI, philandering on a spouse, pushing a parent down the stairs, cutting a lover in the eyeball, or stealing Sephora products?

Why Meryl Streep Lost Best Actress

meryl-streep.jpg
Let's quickly go through all the reasons that pundits like me have been trumpeting throughout the campaign:

*Voters wrongly feel she's been honored already. (She has, but not nearly enough. She should get an award even when she hasn't made a movie!)

"Her role in Julie and Julia was only half a lead. (Yeah, but how about all the times she's been snubbed for whole leads?)

*She has to constantly compete with her own filmography, so every year people say, "This was good, but it's no Sophie's Choice," blah blah.

But I've finally landed on the real reason for the dis. Ageism!

Who's The Best Movie Actress of the Sound Era?

In the "top five" list I'm about to share, I wish I could have squeezed in some more of my old favorites, but their filmographies had some holes in them.

I also wish I could have included a few more current names, but I can't honestly say Kate Winslet, Nicole Kidman, or Cate Blanchett have earned the right--not just yet, anyway.

So here are my all-time faves, in descending order of greatness:

It's Meryl Vs. Sandra!

Did anyone think the Best Actress Oscar race would boil down to a battle royale between the greatest actress of her generation, Meryl Streep, and Miss Congeniality, Sandra Bullock?

No, but with both ladies' Golden Globes wins, that exactly what it's shaping up as.

Mind you, I've always trumpeted my girl Sandy as a real contender and wish to God she'd been nominated for Crash, in which she acted with a capital A.

I happened to find The Blind Side conventional and a bit dull and feel it's weird that this is the film being seized on as her golden chance for immortality.

Who'll Be Nominated For Best Actress?

I'm gazing into my Oscar crystal ball again and predicting the 2009 Best Actress category, the only one that matters to anyone with half a brain.

Take it from Mikey that this year the nominees will be:

Favorite Meryl Movie?

La Streep can do anything--except give a bad performance, it seems. From Sophie to Miranda Priestley to Julia Child and beyond, Meryl's choice is to always do quality work brimming with wit and wisdom. I mean, the woman can pull off drama, comedy, period pieces, cameos, accents, and even singing for Chrissake!

My personal fave of all her fabulash films is Postcards From The Edge because it has it all and a bag of showstopping numbers too.

And yours? Pick any film you want--just don't give me Heartburn.
