Ricky Gervais Amazed By Emmy Nod For Golden Globes Gig

When awards shows get nominated for awards, it's a little like a dog sniffing its own butt.

And sure enough, the Emmys have nominated the Tonys, the Oscars, and the Golden Globes, all of which will probably end up competing for a Pulitzer!

It's all so creepily incestual it's like a cult in the Bahamas.

But not everyone expected Ricky Gervais to get nominated for an Emmy for his pseudo-controversial Globes hosting job, including Gervais himself.

Ricky Gervais: Too Mean On The Golden Globes?

Nah.

Those entitled phonies are sitting there lapping up the glory--and free drinks--and they could certainly deal with a few potshots, especially on a dignity-free night when The Tourist is up for Best Picture and Dame Judi Dench is nominated opposite Jennifer Love Hewitt!

At least that's the point of view I espoused on Lawrence O'Donnell's show on MSNBC last night.

It's Meryl Vs. Sandra!

Did anyone think the Best Actress Oscar race would boil down to a battle royale between the greatest actress of her generation, Meryl Streep, and Miss Congeniality, Sandra Bullock?

No, but with both ladies' Golden Globes wins, that exactly what it's shaping up as.

Mind you, I've always trumpeted my girl Sandy as a real contender and wish to God she'd been nominated for Crash, in which she acted with a capital A.

I happened to find The Blind Side conventional and a bit dull and feel it's weird that this is the film being seized on as her golden chance for immortality.

THE GOOD:

MO'NIQUE: Her speech seemed earnest and passionate and she clinched the Oscar with it by proving that she DOES care and IS grateful.

CHLOE SEVIGNY: Even after someone stepped on her dress, she carried on and was cute and real and even thanked someone who matters to her rather than just read a litany of boring names.

It's James Cameron vs. Kathryn Bigelow!

Forget saving the Navis. James Cameron's biggest mission these days should be to beat his ex-wife, Kathryn Bigelow, for a slew of awards!

Alas, though I'm desperate for their golden competition to turn into the most bitter battle royale since Olivia deHavilland and Joan Fontaine, there seems to be a frightening amount of good will brewing here. In fact, Cameron and Bigelow are friends (Their split was way back in 1991) and he's even the one who advised her to direct The Hurt Locker when she was focusing on some other project!

Performances Lost in the Awards Shuffle

The Oscar nominations aren't out yet, but the Golden Globe ones were announced and all the critics' groups have declared their faves, so it's becoming clear who's being royally shafted this year.

These are the best performances that I feel are sadly being pushed under a truck in favor of bigger and/or more publicized names:
