Your Fave Dance Cuts From the '70s

paisleyromperchinatown.jpg
If you remember dancing through the '70s, then you were definitely there.

And DJ/journalist Paisley Dalton -- who surely wasn't even alive then -- has just the new CD for you.

It's My Chiffon Is Wet, Darlin, which consists of "kunty kuts from NYC underground discotheques, '73-'78."

Well, I just kalled Paisley for some kunty kut talk, so here goes:

Epiphany: A Sassy Drag Queen Who Can Sing

ephinany-red-headshot.jpg

Glamour queen Epiphany is a popular performer/hostess who tells it like it is--and she has a great voice too.

I recently cornered her at a bar for some nocturnal chat worth repeating.

Me: "Hi, Epiphany. What--and whom--do you hate about the NYC drag scene? (Remember, we only have an hour.)"

Exclusive Interview With Molly Equality Dykeman

Molly - Butch Burlesque 2.jpg

Molly Equality Dykeman is a butch security guard who writes poetry on the side.

She also happens to be the creation of comic Andrea Alton, who's livened up many an event in several boroughs with this and other wonderfully oddball creations.

Alton generously allowed me a private chat with hardballin' Molly, which garnered the following nuggets:

The Philadelphia Weekly Loves Me!

Michael_Musto.jpg
via PhiladelphiaWeekly.com
In New York, I generally get greeted with "eh," but the city of brotherly love treats me like the royalty I always imagined I was, back when I drank a bit.

Here's a really nice interview with me that just ran in Philadelphia Weekly.

I wish it was a daily so they could blow me more often!

Inside The Downtown Celebrity Known As Acid Betty

acidbetty1.jpg
Acid Betty--"the fiercest hybrid drag queen in New York"--is unmistakable for her big hair, bigger outfits, and large presence as she takes the stage of every queeny event in town.

I recently sat her down to say "hi" to the hybrid, and here's what I learned:

Sweetie Makes a Movie!

CL_poster2_27x39.jpg
Drag star Sweetie has long brought perfect lipsynch, winning shimmies, and talon-sharp wit to bars that should pay her double. And now she's the focus of a documentary called Charmed Life, which is playing the NY International Independent Film and Video Festival. (October 22-29th.)

To celebrate this event--and because Sweetie's publicist told me they missed the deadline for REAL magazines-- I asked for some funny and/or revealing quotes from Sweetie. They sent me some that she gave to a REAL magazine, Gaydar, ba dum pum. Here goes:

Q: Do you remember your first drag performance?

Sweetie: I performed at NYC's legendary Pyramid Club in the East Village in 1991. I had been mugged the week before and made my drag debut with 75 stitches in my face. I performed with another queen named Faux Pas and I literally did cartwheels in heels and we finished the performance by setting off fireworks inside the club. It was an amazing night in my life.

Check Out His 12 Inch Freak!

greg_scarnici.jpg
Greg Scarnici is a New York satirist who's made wicked fun of Aretha Franklin, Britney Spears, haters, and even the gays. His new comedy dance CD, 12 Inch Freak, is the logical next step for the man who says he's amassed seven million YouTube hits with his spoofy videos. Before he takes aim at me, I decided to feature him in a Q&A.

Dirty Martini Comes Clean!

Carl Giant.jpg
One of the zingiest presences on the scene, Dirty Martini--aka "the chairman of the broad"--is a Rubensian beauty who knows how to shake it up (literally) while stirring an audience so fervently they're afraid to get up because the seat is wet.

I gave the good-time gal a call (and no, it wasn't on a 550 number) and got the dish on Dirty.

Musto: Hi, darling. What makes you so damned sexy?

Dirty Martini: I was blessed with the ability to completely forget all my mistakes right after they occur, and I have a mystical filter in my eye--when I look in the mirror, I see myself at my best...or at least 20 pounds thinner. Thank god I never got addicted to coke because any more self confidence would maybe not be such a good idea for me.

Best Doorman In Town, Derek Neen

Derek.jpg
The most important personages in New York after midnight, doormen set the tone for a club by weeding out undesirables while making the welcomed throngs feel more special than prize pigs at a state fair. The best at this particular craft is Derek Neen, who guards the door at Beige on Tuesdays at B Bar and at Splash on Saturdays as if tossing a demented yet delicious salad. A completely unspoiled charm oozer, Neen is a good person to know--so I'm giving you the chance to do so with this rollicking little q&a:

Hey, Derek. What's the secret to being a good doorperson all these years?

D.N.: A good doorperson should have an insatiable fascination for amusing, sexy, accomplished people....In addition, running an effective door requires patience, an open mind, and a firm hand. Speaking a few extra languages comes in handy, as well as an encyclopedic knowledge of state and international ID's, and one should possess the heart of a hedonist and the mindset of an experienced Brazillian bath house rent boy--in other words by all means encourage and foment revelry and legal vices (in moderation), but don't be taken advantage of.

Q&A With Cute Person Justin Tranter

justintranter.jpg
Justin Hyte
Justin Tranter is a rock star (he's lead singer of the glammy Semi Precious Weapons) AND a jewelry designer (his sexy FETTY line sells at Barneys NY and Barneys COOP). He's ALSO a perfect subject for this widely read blog! So, in between bouts of rubbing sea kelp into my hair, I cornered his pretty self for a quick verbal give-and-take.
