The Christmas List: For the Pothead in Your Life

Posted by Nina Lalli at 4:07 PM, December 20, 2007

This year, ditch the film canister, the baggy, and the recycled spice jar for a pretty little weed box from Jonathan Adler. Santa would want you to be stylishly stoned. Mary Jane Jar, $50.

$10 and Under: Threadster's Guide to Stocking Stuffers

Posted by Nina Lalli at 3:07 PM, December 19, 2007

Our beloved Lynn Yaeger has put together a perfectly loony Under $5 Gift Guide this week, and we thought we'd follow her lead with some picks under $10.

First, you can make your own stocking to stuff with directions from Cathy Moore.

And now, to stuff that baby:

Urban Outfitters' Snow Globe Frame, $6.

Shrink-to-Fit Rope Bracelets from The Spoon Sisters, $3.50 each.

Bone Work Gloves from The Sock Man, $7.

SMILA BAGGE children's light by Ikea, $7.99.

Fred Flare's big as a house diamond ring, rectangle or circle, $6.

Art by Steve Keene. The Williamsburg artist has different stuff all the time, but a lot of his awesome paintings and sculptures are under $10 or even under $5. SKSK is open on the weekends from 2-6 PM at 85 WYTHE AVENUE.

The Spoon Sisters' Tattoes for the Elderly, 10 for $6. 75. (Tattooes for Babies also available.)

Prophecy Board from curiosityshoppeonline.com, $4.

Monogrammed Mugs from Anthropologie, $6 each.

The Christmas List: Customized Air Max 90s

Posted by Nina Lalli at 1:52 PM, December 14, 2007

When we get bored of taking demented quizzes and playing scrabble on Facebook, we like to occupy ourselves waste away our life customizing fantasy sneakers on Nike.com. For Christmas, we're hoping someone will read this and give us a $130 gift certificate to the website. Then, if we can ever stop revising the kicks, we will actually get to wear them. If anyone at Nike is reading this, we'd like to request that you bring back the infrared, which a wise sneakerhead friend recently described as "the best made-up color ever." There are some cool new design features, though, most notably the option to have crocodile- or alligator-embossed leather on the base and mudguard.

The Christmas List: Zodiac Doorknockers

Posted by Nina Lalli at 12:26 PM, December 11, 2007

Perhaps these are a more appropriate birthday present than Christmas, but they're on our list anyway. We can't wait. Fred Flare is going to make your life real easy. It's the best place for stocking stuffers, gifts for teenagers, or women who act like teenagers. The zodiac earrings are $10 a pair.

The Christmas List: Our Favorite Coffee Mug

Posted by Nina Lalli at 12:52 PM, December 10, 2007

Bodanna, the East Village's coolest ceramics shop/non-profit, is one of our favorite places to buy gifts, especially of the house-warming variety. The business is run with the help of inner city teens, who do apprenticeships in the studio and in the shop. And while we love a good cause, we wouldn't buy vases and mugs and bowls that weren't great-looking. Every morning, we drink coffee out of the Morning Mug, the perfect big, comforting cup. ($25 each).

Happy Hanukkah! We Found the Only Cool Menorah in Existence

Posted by Nina Lalli at 3:03 PM, December 4, 2007

Do you have any Jew friends who are extremely hip, and have only mid-century modern lamps in their houses, and you never know what to give them? Well, if you have 200 bucks, you should get them Walteria Living's "Last Match" menorah, which is actually cool. Actually. Cool. Menorah. Whoa.

The Christmas List: Spa Gifts for the Beauty Illiterate

Posted by Nina Lalli at 8:03 AM, December 4, 2007

Full disclosure: The founders of Lifebooker, a new website which is like Open Table, but for spas, are friends of Threadster's. For the holidays, they have gift certificates, which means you can give your mom a massage without a) rubbing her anywhere, or b) having to figure out whether she wants reflexology or aromatherapy. Or she could decide to book some acupuncture or a fake tan or a Brazilian—ew—instead.

If you're not feeling the holiday spirit just yet, you might be more interested in this link, which tells you how to get $50 off any spa treatment through the website. You look like you could use an Ayurvedic Baltic Mud Wrap or something.

The Christmas List: Black Sheep Sweater

Posted by Nina Lalli at 4:11 PM, November 13, 2007

Since it doesn't seem polite to actually register for Christmas gifts, we here at Threadster have decided to make our hopes and dreams public, in case anyone would like to fulfil them (hi Mom!) this year.

Alternatively, this may give you readers some ideas for things you'd like to give or request. First up: The black sheep sweater from Cordarounds. Yes, a sweater made from black sheep, and a very cute (unisex) one for $114.

From the website:

This holiday season, we're proud to unveil our latest concept: the Black Sheep Sweater -- an idea that began with a "What if?" followed by a resounding "Why not?" Within minutes, we were asking the woolsmiths of the world if such a garment could possibly be produced.

Turns out it's difficult to find enough black sheep to make the damn things. But we kept on looking, because at Cordarounds we believe the black sheep of the family ought to be able to wear the figure of speech.

At long last, we found a mill in Ireland that manufactures black sheep sweaters in an old-worldly, wonderfully eco-sensitive way.

Dylan McKay and the Baja Sweatshirt are Back

Posted by Nina Lalli at 5:14 PM, November 12, 2007

If this image does not stir up overwhelming feelings of lust and nostalgia, you're not our target audience. But if you have ever been in love with Dylan McKay, or some spaced-out, greasy-haired boy who had a Baja sweatshirt you borrowed flirtatiously, you'll be glad to know that we have decided to bring that shit back. Thanks to one of our favorite stores, La Sirena, a tiny Mexican shop on East Third Street, we can chanel the surfer/stoner/slacker inside. They even have some lined with fleece. (About $20.)

It's a Good One: Built By Wendy on Sale

Posted by Nina Lalli at 5:08 PM, August 27, 2007

After purchasing a Philip Lim dress on sale at Bird yesterday for $159, we've more than used up our sale-season splurge budget, but we urge you to take advantage. Perhaps you could use an anchor-printed tunic from Built By Wendy for $106?

It's a Good One: Plastic Surgery Make-Believe

Posted by Nina Lalli at 6:53 PM, August 13, 2007

A small confession: we here at Threadster have complicated feelings about plastic surgery. On the one hand, we would never alter our own quite bumpy nose, nor have we ever desired big hard fake tits. We are saddened when we look at Courtney Love.

And yet, we can't stop watching Dr. 90210. Our DVR doesn't let us miss an episode. We also love The Swan, Extreme Makeover, and Plastic Surgery Before & After. Sometimes we overdose on this type of programming, and find ourselves looking at people on the subway and thinking about whether they need a jaw implant or if fat injections could take care of it.

We also sometimes marvel at the idea of what Dr. Rey would want to do to us. Definitely a nose job, lip injections, boobs, and major lipo, just for starters. For the time being, we'll have to keep occupied with E!'s online celebrity facelift game, which Jezebel brought to our attention.

It's a Good One: A Golden Retainer

Posted by Nina Lalli at 6:49 PM, August 6, 2007

Are we too old for irony? Is it over? Well, luckily we're way too poor to buy Kiel Mead's hilarious, awesome hand-made gold cast retainer necklace, which is $295 at Kar'ikter on Prince Street. Right before we saw this, we saw a big dumb-looking dude wearing a shirt that said "NERD" across the chest. Nerd.
