Magnolia Hysteria: Maybe They Should Get a Cat!

Posted by Nina Lalli at 4:57 PM, July 11, 2007

Today, the Health Department closed Magnolia Bakery for not having a second sink in the cupcake-icing area. Perhaps you heard about it? Perhaps you had some kind of yuppie breakdown?

Philip Baltz, in a statement via Eater, was remarkably forthcoming:

"The bakery was also cited for a missing door handle, a missing light cover, and several mouse droppings and fruit flies by our garbage area. These last two violations come in spite of a thorough three times weekly rigorous extermination and internal inspection process."

This does seem like a smart move, because clearly, all us sick-headed bloggers will be reading the full inspection results soon enough on the city's always-entertaining website.

By the way, Magnolia's last inspection, from March, 2006, revealed that this mouse issue isn't exactly new:

1.) Facility not vermin proof. Harborage or conditions conducive to vermin exist.

2.) Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility's food and/or non-food areas.

Well, I'm upset. I LOVED Magnolia's and Always looked forward to going there while in the area. There's always the spinoff uptown (Buttercups?). And I have the recipe book and have made my very own Magnoia Bakery cupcakes--not the same, but will do for now.

They're back open. It was just temporary.
