Incredibly Cheap Eats -- Stall 38, Golden Shopping Mall

DSC01115v.jpg

Stall 38, downstairs at the Golden Shopping Mall, features the food of Xian, a province in China adjacent to Inner Mongolia. The comfy seating area is surrounding by color photos of all the stall's offerings, making a common language unnecessary. One of the best (and quickest) dishes is the so-called Chinese burger -- really, a homemade pita slit and stuffed with lamb sauteed with plenty of Asian cumin, the seeds of which are smaller, darker, and more pungent than Western cumin, the kind ubiquitous in Mexican cooking. If you want to settle for the equally tasty pork version of the Chinese burger, it costs 50 cents less. The menu also features all sorts of noodle and spongy tofu dishes, all less than $5, and some fiery as hell. 41-28 Main Street, Flushing, Queens. The cost: $2.50
