International Booze Tastings
In the event that you're one of the few people in the city who still have the cash to blow on booze tastings, there are two big ones coming up on Monday, January 26th.
The Union des Grand Crus de Bordeaux is in town to promote the 2006 vintage. During the day, they'll have a trade tasting, and in the evening a public tasting (that means you). More than 90 châteaux will be in attendance, and winemakers will pour wines from both the 2005 and 2006 vintages. The wines being tasted will include over a half a dozen Bordeaux that made Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2008. The event is at the Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers (23rd Street and Hudson River); tickets at $95 and can be purchased here.
The Joy of Sake is hosting an "Aftertaste" event on Monday as well. For $37, you'll get to taste 37 sakes and nibble on appetizers. We checked out their main event last fall and tasted a dizzying number of sakes, however it was quite crowded and those crowds gobbled up the Nobu appetizers right quick. This event is limited to 50 people, so it should it be a far mellower affair. The event is being held at Sumile Restaurant (154 West 13th Street) and tickets can be purchased here.
