What to Bring to Abistro, Fort Greene
For this week's 'What to B,' we turned to Abistro (154 Carlton Avenue, Brooklyn), a quaint spot in Fort Greene serving Senegalese and French fare. Just around the corner, Gnarly Vines Wine & Spirits (350 Myrtle Avenue, Brooklyn ) had some suggestions for bottles to bring to the restaurant.
Abistro's menu feature lots of seafood, so Gnarly Vines manager Lauren Kelleher says she usually recommends a light red, like a Cabernet Franc "that is light enough for seafood but can hold up to the spice and also work with meat." At $16, their 2007 Domaine des Vallettes, St Nicolas de Bourgueil from the Loire Valley is a Cab Franc that almost sneaks in under $15 (our price cap) and pairs well with herb-seasoned food. And Kelleher has some suggestions in the under $15 range:
2002, Cardeal Reserva Touriga Nacional, Dao, Portugal ($13.50)
This dry red table wine is "very rich but medium-bodied," she says, perfect for standing up to bold spices.
2007 La Hitaire 'Les Tour' Ugni Blanc Blend, Gascogne, France ($12)
For a white option, Kelleher says this "crisp, dry white wine, that's lemony and fresh would go well with some of their seafood dishes, like their salty codfish fritters or calamari."
