Fast Food Causing Colon Cancer Rates to Rise; Prez Boosts Five Guys Burger Business

While the overall rate of people with colon cancer has gone down over the years, more people under the age of 50 are being diagnosed, especially in the 20-29-year-old range. The prevalence of fast-food is a possible culprit.

Founded by Jerry Murrell, it's one of the fastest growing restaurant chains in the country, thanks in part to visits from a certain first family--Michelle was at a Dupont Circle location in April for lunch with her staff, and the president stopped by a D.C. shop with Brian Williams and an NBC news crew last month.

Starbucks serves the best fast-food coffee, according to a Zagat survey. More than 6,000 respondents participated in a the survey, which rates the food and service of some 100 restaurant chains across the country.

A quicker food safety test has been designed by a group at Purdue University. Researchers there have successfully used infrared spectroscopy to detect melamine down to one part per million within a few minutes.

Most people don't wash their hands before tucking into their favorite finger foods, but they should. Now that 80 percent of us work indoors, we are exposed to way more germs than we would be outside. "There are 400 times more viruses on the average desktop than the average toilet," says a microbiologist. And those germs go into your mouth after every finger-licking french fry. Ick.
