This week, Counter Culture sandwiches itself into An Choi, a newish Vietnamese restaurant on the Lower East. The menu is limited, but much of it is quite good. Though we found the banh mi expensive compared to those in nearby Chinatown (we staged a statistical comparison), An Choi offers amenities--and a few outstanding menu choices--that may make it preferable to the bare-bones, no-seating Viet sandwich places of Mott and environs.
By night, An Choi manages to look like a hawker stall in, say, Ho Chi Minh City.

Certainly, the pho is the real article, this shot showing the free beef balls you can have added.
Appetize if you must, but go for the grease in the form of pork-and-crab-stuffed spring rolls.
The pork belly banh mi is unique to An Choi--and delicious.
