Vegetarian Delights of NYC--Bureks at Burektorja Dukagjini

DSC00623v.jpg
Inspired by the Turks, the spinach-and-cheese burek is one of the glories of Albanian cuisine. (click to masticate)

A burek is a flaky filo pie shaped like a spare tire. Conventionally, it can be stuffed with cheese, spinach and cheese, or ground meat, with little in the way of spices or herbs. This is plain peasant food and ultra-satisfying. Bureks are normally cut into quarters, and one 90-degree wedge makes a very full and nutritious meal.

The above burek wedge was snagged at Burektorja Dukagjini, a coffee house just south of Pelham Parkway, which also squirts admirable espresso. For $4, there's no better vegetarian meal in the Bronx. 758 Lydig Avenue, Pelham Parkway, the Bronx, 718-822-8955
