Food at the Other Brooklyn Flea: Barbecue, Caribbean Hot Sauce

sauce flea.jpg
You already know about all the good food at the Fort Greene Brooklyn Flea, but there's another flea market in Brooklyn, a nascent group of stalls on 20th Street between Fourth and Fifth Avenues in Sunset Park/South Slope/Greenwood Heights/whatever you want to call it. The market runs on Saturdays and Sundays; for now, it's just a dozen or so vendors parked on the hot asphalt, selling jewelry, books, and sundries.

On Saturday, there were two food stalls. The most elaborate was a barbecue spot run by the guy who used to own the now-closed Bar-B-Q on Sixth Avenue and 20th Street. The offerings included a 20-hour-smoked brisket, barbecued chicken, and sweet iced tea with mint and cucumber.

There was also a family-run Caribbean foods stall peddling seasoned chickpeas and several stellar hot sauces. The sauces are classic Caribbean-style--floral, incendiary habaneros, lots of garlic, and carrots for sweetness.

Saturdays and Sundays, approximately 11 a.m.- 5 p.m.
