The City Room reports that FreshDirect has cut the number of cardboard boxes it uses for delivery by 1.5 million since last year. The decrease is the result of a new system used by the company that allows items that were previously packed separately to be packed together. So big boxes containing one lonesome apple are now a thing of the past.

The cardboard boxes themselves will also soon be a thing of the past: next year, FreshDirect will replace them with paper bags that will be delivered in reusable plastic containers.
