No Farm, No Foul? Farmed Salmon on Drugs, Possibly Mad

While it's not all bad news for fish lovers these days, navigating your local fish market can still feel like walking through a minefield of over-harvested, unsustainable choices. Now, Gourmet reports that we should also be worried about rife antibiotic use in certain fish farms. A report found that Chilean salmon farms used nearly 600 times more antibiotics than Norwegian ones did in 2007. And, in case you need another reason to avoid fish sourced from the festering petri dishes that many a fish farm appear to be, TreeHugger has uncovered research suggesting that people may be able to contract Creutzfeldt-Jakob -- a human version of mad cow disease -- from farmed fish fed mad cow-diseased animals parts. Yikes!
