More on Nunu Chocolate's New Bar: "It's Crazy Business!"

More on the news -- first reported by Brooklyn Based -- that Nunu Chocolate will be converting its Atlantic Avenue shop into a bar this autumn.

"It's crazy business!" Justine Pringle says with a laugh. "I don't know what we were thinking." Pringle, Nunu's founder, says that the idea for the bar came about because "we [she and her husband and business partner, Andy Laird] like to drink, and we like chocolate." Pringle says that construction is slated to start in about two weeks and should be completed by mid-September. The shop will remain open with limited summer hours during construction. Once it's finished, the converted space will house a production kitchen in the rear and a shop and bar in the front. The kitchen will be separated by a glass wall, allowing customers to watch chocolate being made as they drink.

The bar will serve beer and wine -- it's too close to a mosque to have a full liquor license -- as well as an expanded line of truffles. Pringle is planning to source the beer locally, and says that the bar should be able to accommodate up to 25 people. Nunu's hours will reflect its new designation: "We're thinking of 12 p.m. to 1 a.m., but also of serving coffee and hot chocolate in the morning," Pringle says.

Getting community approval for her plans wasn't difficult, she adds. "The main aspect of the bar is chocolate," she says. "We're not expecting a lot of drunken people falling about."
