On Monday, Mayor Bloomberg held a press conference to announce the city's plan to invest more than $165 million into the revitalization of the Brooklyn waterfront. According to the accompanying press release, Phoenix Beverages, a large beer and beverage distributor whose brands include Guinness, Coca-Cola, and Smirnoff, will be responsible for much of the new activity on the Red Hook piers.

The company, which recently finalized a 20-year sublease with the city's Economic Development Corporation, "will invest $3.8 million to consolidate its operations from Long Island City and New Jersey to the new Red Hook facility, moving about 500 workers to Red Hook and hiring up to 100 additional workers over the next 18 months."

The company plans to do local hiring in Red Hook; construction on the facility, which is scheduled to be fully operational in six months, begins in August.
