...Josh Morgan (Houston's) and Robert Werhane (Dell'anima, L'Artusi) talked about their plans for the former Bar Q space at 308 Bleecker Street: Their "Chesapeake Bay-inspired fish house" will feature seasonal small bites and weekly specials. Morgan and Werhane have spent three years planning the concept, which was inspired by their youth in Maryland. The SLA committee seemed receptive to their application for a license transfer, though questioned how much noise would result from their plans to turn the backyard into an outdoor dining space.
The owners of Virage, a Mediterranean bistro on Second Avenue, plan to bring the same concept to the West Village with Moz, a new restaurant they plan to open on Hudson Street.
Representatives for Carroll Gardens' South Brooklyn Pizza, which has plans to open a second location at 150 Prince Street, were no-shows, leading committee chair Raymond Lee to make a motion to recommend denial for a liquor license.
Representatives for Bowery Time, which had plans to turn the old Marion's Continental space at 354 and 356 Bowery into a restaurant and lounge, have agreed to split up the two spaces into two separate licenses; they plan to have a downstairs bar serving food, an upstairs area for private events, and brunch and dinner seven days a week.
Serafina's owner Fabio Granato plans to open a 24-hour "Mediterranean-style" restaurant on the first and second floors of the former Rio Mar space at 7 Ninth Avenue. Granato hopes to appeal to the Meatpacking District's late-night crowd but stressed that the restaurant would be "nice and neat and clean."
Residents of Crosby and Lafayette streets -- and a representative of Councilman Alan Gerson's office -- came out in force to voice opposition to the Midnight Cafe's application for renewal of their full liquor license. The cafe's owners had originally come before the board in 2007 to get a beer and wine license for what they claimed would be a restaurant; shortly after, they went to the SLA for a full liquor license and have turned the space into a bar. Neighbors reported endless noise, fights, and even a riot; one resident said that the bar had contributed to "the demise of a safe, family-oriented neighborhood."
The Todd English Group has plans for a restaurant, lounge, and rooftop bar at the 25 Great Jones Street hotel; committee members voiced concern that the area was already saturated with similar hotels and restaurants.
