Brooklyn Mexican Restaurant Is "Quality-of-Life Hazard"

According to the Daily News, El Gavilan, a Mexican restaurant that opened on Church Avenue three years ago, has in recent months more resembled a nightclub than a destination for chicken tacos. Following numerous complaints, the Kensington restaurant was raided on July 29 and given a number of citations for everything from selling alcohol to minors to operating an unlicensed dance hall. Neighbors had reported that loud music, fights, and drunks were commonplace at El Gavilan; the president of the Albermarle Neighborhood Association called it a "quality-of-life hazard." The NYPD civil enforcement division is seeking to close the restaurant for at least 30 days while police and the SLA conduct a probe.
