Booze News: Custom Ice Abounds; Booze Hounds Healthier Mentally & Physically

A new breed of mixologist is obsessed with ice, using enormous cubes custom made by ice sculpture suppliers, ice balls the size of oranges, and long ice tubes for highballs. Dilution has become a dirty word.

With a new Whole Foods in the space formerly occupied by the legendary jazz club Mikell's from 1969 to 1991, the supermarket chain and the Harlem Brewing Company will host a free Friday night jazz series.

Angelo Cammarata, the oldest bartender according to the Guinness Book of World Records, is retiring. The owner of Pittsburgh's Cammarata's Cafe, which will close in a few weeks, has been serving drinks since 1933.

A new study suggests that teetotalers may be more prone to depression than moderate drinkers. While excessive alcohol consumption is detrimental to physical and mental health, abstainers are more likely to be depressed than occasional drinkers.

Meanwhile, another study says that people who drink regularly seem to exercise more often than teetotalers. In fact, heavy drinkers -- those who down at least 76 drinks per month -- exercised for an average of 20 minutes more per week than abstainers.

Jagermeister gained popularity in the 1990s as a mysterious German liqueur that may or may not contain opiates. Its association with Metallica and Slayer -- not to mention with Red Bull in the infamous Jager Bomb -- has kept it out of serious cocktail circles.
