End of an Era: Planet Thailand Is Closed

Brooklyn11211 reports that Planet Thailand, the cavernous pan-Asian restaurant that helped put Williamsburg on the restaurant map back in the '90s, has closed for good. The closure was confirmed by an employee at the restaurant's sister location in Chelsea, which will remain open. As 11211 notes, the restaurant originally existed in a tiny Bedford Avenue storefront and in 1999 expanded to a larger space on Berry and North 7th streets (the former space is now one-half of Spike Hill). As more restaurants opened in the neighborhood, Planet Thai became less of a destination, and its quality arguably suffered; 11211 describes its menu as "the Microsoft Vista of pan-Asian eateries -- pure bloatware."

Should you be feeling nostalgic and not quite bloated enough, the restaurant's second outpost brings, its website says, the "Williamsburgh (sic) aesthetic" to Chelsea.
