Gourmet, Bon Appetit Are in for a Reducing Regimen

"Reduction" is an ominous word in the food world, redolent with euphemistic starvation regimens and shadowy surgical weight-loss procedures. So it's difficult to shake off feelings of imminent doom when the word is applied to food magazines that are already facing financial difficulties. Case in point: according to an article in today's Observer, both Gourmet and Bon Appetit seem to be poised for "frequency reductions" as part of the budgetary streamlining taking place at Conde Nast:

"The epicurean titles, Gourmet and Bon Appetit, are most commonly mentioned as candidates for reduced publishing schedules. There is also the possibility that the two staffs could be streamlined."

In other words, the future of the two publications may be encapsulated by the title of yet another food mag: Cooking Light, anyone?
