Russ & Daughters in the Financial District, This Week Only

In celebration of the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's voyage to the New World, the city's been doing all sorts of Dutch-themed things this week, including building New Amsterdam Village, a replica of a Dutch village, in Bowling Green Park. Among all of the windmills and stroopwafels, there's also, it turns out, aquatic sundries from Russ & Daughters. Niki Russ Federman, one of the fourth-generation proprietors of the venerable appetizing store, tells Fork in the Road that "there's Dutch herring, smoked salmon, and mackerel being served off of an 85-year-old puschart that's been souped up with refrigeration and a generator." Visitors can consume real Hollandse Nieuwe "the way Dutch do it, served by nice Dutch people in Dutch outfits."  Federman adds that the cart has been going through about 400 Holland herring a day, along with about 30 pounds of mackerel and some 10 pounds of smoked salmon. "We keep having to run over there and re-supply them," she says. The Village -- and the fish -- will be around until the 14th; after that, clupeophiles can battle the High Holiday lines for a taste at the Russ counter.
