The French Not So Keen on Julia Child
In France, Julie and Julia was released yesterday. But it turns out that most French people have never heard of Julia Child--The Art of French Cooking was never translated into French--and those who have are decidedly lukewarm on the subject. Julie Andrieu, a cookbook author, is quoted in the Times, calling Child's cooking "academic and bourgeois." (Ouch!) ""It shows that in America, the cliche of beef, baguette and canard farci remains." ![]()

Interestingly, other chefs and food personalities interviewed note that Americans write better cookbooks than the French, since we have a more democratic approach to food, while many French scoff at the need for a recipe. The article certainly does nothing to dispel stereotypes on either side of the Atlantic.
