The French Not So Keen on Julia Child

In France, Julie and Julia was released yesterday. But it turns out that most French people have never heard of Julia Child--The Art of French Cooking was never translated into French--and those who have are decidedly lukewarm on the subject. Julie Andrieu, a cookbook author, is quoted in the Times, calling Child's cooking "academic and bourgeois." (Ouch!) ""It shows that in America, the cliche of beef, baguette and canard farci remains."

Interestingly, other chefs and food personalities interviewed note that Americans write better cookbooks than the French, since we have a more democratic approach to food, while many French scoff at the need for a recipe. The article certainly does nothing to dispel stereotypes on either side of the Atlantic.
