The Lo-Down brings word
of the imminent opening of Saffa, a South African restaurant located in the former Sonia Rose
space at 74 Orchard Street. The restaurant, which is slated to open tomorrow, will feature South African staples like bunnychow, an Indian or Malay curry served in a hollowed-out loaf of white bread; boerewors, a sausage dish with many regional varieties; and slap chips, which is basically South African slang for French fries. Saffa, whose kitchen will be led by a former Madiba
chef, will join one of the most ethnically diverse restaurant blocks in Manhattan: The stretch between Broome and Grand is already home to establishments serving Austrian, Jamaican, Vietnamese, Thai, and upscale down-home American cuisine.
