Gourmet Magazine Turns into a Corpse in Time for Halloween

The October cover provided a premonition: we now realize the apple was resting in a puddle of blood.

Diner's Journal reports that Gourmet, perhaps the country's most famous glossy food mag, is going to shut down after its November issue. I've worked for the mag since Ruth Reichl took over as editor in 2000, and in the early years of her tenure, traveled extensively for Gourmet and did two cover stories, among many features. In the magazine's 68 year history, it has provided a springboard for many more food writers, and has made many careers. It's highly ironic, that as the number of food writers soars, the number of well-paying, hold-in-you-hand print showcases has dwindled. R.I.P. Gourmet.
