The Early Word: Cafe Barakah

A grand opening at Cafe Barakah
A talented Pakistani-Punjabi shopkeeper who was whipping up dishes like channa masala and selling them at her Brooklyn health food shop has expanded. Cafe Barakah, on Fourth Avenue at 21st Street, opened about two months ago, and offers homemade aloo ghobi (potato-cauliflower stew), daal, biryani, and chapli kebab, among other South Asian standards. A cup of masala chai, obtained this afternoon, was perfect--beautifully spiced with ginger and cardamom (a whole green pod bobbed in the tea).
