The NYC Dumpling Festival is Nigh

• Sorry to hear that. I had lunch with my mom in Flushing at this new cafe. I look forward to hear your opinions on the events.

• It was awful! small servings ($5 for three dumplings), and many of the things were not even dumplings (tamales, for example). i'm doing a blog post about it, but you were lucky to not have gone. and since a frozen dumpling company was sponsoring the event, there could be no good dumplings sold. you were lucky to have not gone!

• Did the event happen or was it a washout?

• hi kim -- it's going to be cold, too, so probably not all that crowded. i'm worried about the quality of the dumplings, since it's sponsored by a big frozen food corporation. i'm going at noon, maybe see you there!

• Gnocchi can be classified as either dumplings or pasta, but not ravioli, since they aren't stuffed with anything. i guess that's the rationale. The problem, I guess, is English itself, which is rather impoverished as a food language. Dumplings means several different things. One is the Chinese meaning of noodley substance wrapped around a filling, but it also means a big sodden bready thing with no filling, as in "chicken and dumplings." In Jamaica, it means a finger of rubbery dough, with no lightness or leavening at all.

• I still don't get why Gnocchi is on the menu... can that be called a dumpling? shouldn't it be ravioli?

• how crowded would you expect the event to be considering it'? going to rain tomorrow.
