How Do You Spell G-U-T-B-O-M-B? Apple Crumb Bar From Margaret Palca Bakes

applegutbomb.jpg
To fatten up for the winter, we suggest downing one of Margaret Palca's enormous apple crumb bars. Weighing in at at least a fourth of a pound, this confection has a flaky crust topped with a thick layer of apples, crowned with a flurry of buttery crumb. It's a grandmotherly treat, and satisfies the craving for appley baked goods that comes when the leaves change color. Palca's bakery has been on Columbia Street since 1985, when she got her start as a wholesaler. Her rugelach are legendary.
