The Top 40 Locavore Chefs Under 40

Mother Nature Network has put together a list of the country's 40 most important rising culinary stars under the age of 40. The list focuses on chefs who use fresh, local, and sustainable ingredients and adhere to a farm-to-table philosophy. Surprisingly, there are only two New Yorkers in the bunch -- and neither cooks in Manhattan.

Hiroshima, Japan native Sawa Okochi, who cut her teeth at Annisa and is now the chef de cuisine at The Good Fork in Red Hook, made the list -- and was the only New York City toque to do so. Josh Lawler, the chef de cuisine at Blue Hill at Stone Barns, was also cited. Oh, and Jersey boy James Malaby, who owns blueplate in Mullica Hill, made the cut, too. Other notables included White House chef Sam Kass, Top Cheftestant Kevin Gillespie, and Next Iron Chef contender Jose Garces.
