Looking for a silver lining to the economic downturn? Well, for one thing, Streit's is still making matzo at 150 Rivington on the Lower East Side, just as they have since 1925.

In 2007, the company, which is the only remaining family-owned and operated matzo-maker in the United States, put their building on the market for $25 million, planning to decamp to a less-cramped space in New Jersey. Some godawful glass condo was sure to take its place. But then real estate took a nose-dive, and the Streits decided to wait it out.

Aron and Nettie Streit immigrated from Austria to the United States in the 1890s, and opened a small matzo bakery on Pitt Street in 1916. In 1925, Aron, now joined by his sons, built the factory in a tenement building at Rivington and Suffolk, which is where it remains, at least for now.
