A New Kathi Roll Joint for Cricket Fans in Curry Hill

A new kathi roll spot is coming to Curry Hill, distinguishing itself with a sports-centric focus. "You know, in Australia, Pakistan, and India, cricket is a religion," says owner Gaurav Anand, a Delhi native who also owns Bhatti Grill, across the street. "I miss it all the time." So Anand is betting on this formula: affordable kathi rolls, permanent BYOB, and live cricket on big screens.

Anand says that the rolls, iconic Kolkata street foods now popular all over India, will be customizable: Choose a white or whole wheat paratha, plus a filling of grilled kabob (lamb seekh, goat, or marinated chicken), vegetable, or paneer. A layer of egg and/or green chiles can be added for no extra charge. (Two rolls and a soda will cost $8.95.)

Supplementary fillings will also be available, displayed at a counter that Anand likens to the sort you see at Subway. In India, a kathi roll is generally filled simply, usually no more than a thin layer of egg, meat, onion, and chile. "But Americans love to eat tomatoes, green and red peppers," says Anand. "And we want to offer whatever people like."

Aside from those rolls, there will also be masala chai spiced with cardamom, fennel, and ginger, and WiFi. Anand hopes to open Kathi Rolls this Friday. After a few weeks, the restaurant will kick into high gear, serving food until 2 a.m. Thursday through Saturday, and opening whenever there's a big cricket match on in the world.
