Drank Gets Some Company: Anti-Energy Drinks Supposedly One of 2010's Next Food Trends

Mary Jane's Relaxing Soda provides: sugary sedation in a bottle.

About a year and a half ago, Drank came along to teach us all a thing or two about achieving a stress-free state of mind through a lulling combination of melatonin, valerian root, rose hips, and carbonation. Now, it looks like the grape-flavored antidote to Red Bull and hand-eye coordination is getting some company.

According to an article on the LA Times blog, Southern California has become a hotbed of consumption for Mary Jane's Relaxing Soda, a sugary beverage spiked with kava, a plant common in the islands of the South Pacific that's said to have sedative properties.

The Mary Jane's website claims that the drink produces a "'calming' sensation" that "can be felt throughout the body and mind," sort of like marijuana but without such side effects as "laziness, 2 am pizza runs, black light posters, or handcuffs."

Mary Jane's, the LAT points out, is but one of a growing number of "slow-down" drinks, such as Ex Chill and Slow Cow; according to at least one big ad agency, such beverages are expected to be one of the big food trends of 2010, provided that anyone can find energy to tally their sales receipts.
