John Mackey Steps Down as Whole Foods Chairman

Plenty of people saw this coming in the wake of his Wall Street Journal tirade against the Obama health care plan, but it appears that John Mackey has finally stepped down as the chairman of Whole Foods.

As Natural Foods Merchandiser reports, ctW Investment Group, an alliance of shareholder activists who work with union pension funds, had asked Mackey to step down in the wake of his August Journal editorial, which angered a significant segment of Whole Foods's customer base. Mackey, who had acted as chairman since 1978, will still occupy the company's ruling ranks, but will presumably have his air time curbed a bit -- meaning no more New Yorker profiles in which he hates on unions, global warming, and vegetable oil.
