Baguettes to beat off the competition.
The Belgian chain, which has 20 locations in Manhattan, will spend $1 million to turn the space into an 80-seat cafe-restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. LPQ beat out several other contenders, including the Upper West Side's Dovetail, for the cafe; the next hurdle it has to clear is for a beer and wine license. No word yet on who will be operating the proposed gourmet food cart near the Bethesda fountain, but maybe the Parks Department will actually throw a bone -- or at least a sustainably caught mahi mahi wrap -- to a local business for a change.
