Finally, the Bronx Gets New Supermarkets
The Bronx to get lost in a supermarket.
Here's some good news for what is possibly the most nutritionally underserved borough in the city: The Bronx is going to get two new supermarkets.
The Times reports that the city has approved millions of dollars in tax and real estate benefits for two grocery stores that are slated to begin construction in the Bronx in the spring and summer.
The stores -- a Foodtown and a newly expanded Western Beef -- are the first to be approved under Fresh Retail Expansion to Support Health (FRESH) program, which promotes the development of grocery stores in underserved communities by providing zoning and economic benefits to their developers and operators.
FRESH, which is part of the city's Economic Development Corporation, approved about $3 million in benefits for the Foodtown, which is being rebuilt after burning down in December, and $5.6 million for Western Beef, which is replacing and expanding its current store on Park Avenue. The new store will have a bigger selection of fresh produce, meat, and dairy products, which it must have to qualify for FRESH benefits. But, we can't help wondering, will it also carry fudge-covered Ritz crackers?
