Moby Chews on Some Gristle
Being New York's most recognizable bald vegan just wasn't enough for Moby, who's now added "anthology editor" to his list of accomplishments. The musician and Teany co-founder has just edited (with Miyun Park) Gristle, a collection of essays about meat.
Specifically, the anthology's essays cover topics related to industrial animal farming and consumption, and are written by experts in the fields of animal welfare, science, farming, workers' rights, environmental sustainability, and the food business. The Whole Earth Catalog's Frances Moore Lappe is in there, as are Whole Foods' John Mackey and, a bit more randomly, Lauren Bush, who's described as both the "founder of FEED Projects" and "famous niece and granddaughter."
According to its publisher, the book, which is subtitled From Factory Farms to Food Safety (Thinking Twice About the Meat We Eat), is targeted at anyone "thinking twice about the consequences of our industrial factory-farming system of raising animals for food."
The book, which comes out this spring, would presumably make an ideal companion text for Jonathan Safran Foer's Eating Animals or Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma, if not an excellent door prize at the next Brooklyn Beefsteak.
