Pain d'Avignon Is (at Long Last) Open in the Essex Street Market

Behold: bread has come to the Essex Street Market.

Excellent news for everybody except, perhaps, the gluten-intolerant: After months of delays, Pain d'Avignon Bakery has opened in the Essex Street Market. Located in the old Roni-Sue space, it's packed floor to ceiling with baguettes, rolls, boules, challah, and the like. The shop is the first retail location of the Long Island City-based wholesale bakery, which has long supplied hotels and restaurants throughout Manhattan. Despite its Gallic name, the three owners of Pain d'Avignon, Uliks Fehmiu, Branislav Stamenkovic, and Teofil Zurovac, hail from the former Yugoslavia; they opened the original bakery in Cape Cod in 1992.
