Sandwiched Pops Up at the Whitney

Museum dining continues apace: Danny Meyer's pop-up sandwich joint in the Whitney will open on Thursday and close on May 30th, to coincide with 2010, the museum's Biennial.

The eatery was designed by Jeffrey Inaba's architecture collective INABA and
C-Lab. Inaba has said that the inspiration for the cafe installation was the Breuer building itself: "The idea that postwar architecture, however bold in form or expressive in materials, verges on feeling institutional," he said. "We wanted respond to this predicament by softening the environment and making it more human and hospitable by using a palette of contemporary, synthetic materials..."

As for the menu, it's filled with sandwiches that name-check other Meyer restaurants, like the Tabla Bombay pita panino (cringe), Blue Smoke applewood-smoked turkey and gouda, and Eleven Madison Park chicken schnitzel.

And yes, the Eleven Madison Park sandwich is about five dollars more expensive than the others.

Meanwhile, Meyer's permanent cafe at the Whitney will open in the fall.
