Umami, Now in Tube Form

Now in squeezable form.
After a recent study confirmed its existence, it was only a matter of time before someone came up with a way to market straight-up umami to the masses. And what better way to do that than by stuffing it in a tube?

Britain's Daily Telegraph reports that the elusive "fifth taste," which was discovered by Japanese scientists 102 years ago, is now being sold in tube form under the name of Taste No. 5. The product is a puree of ingredients associated with umami, such as anchovies and mushrooms, and was created by a London restaurateur. It's being sold at Waitrose, a British grocery chain; there's no word yet on when or if the squeezable umami will reach our shores.

Regardless of its future here, we'd imagine that Dr. Shintaro Yoshida and his colleagues at the Umami Information Center, which is dedicated to the study and promotion of umami, are pretty excited.
