From the Annals of Idiocy: NY State Assemblyman Introduces Bill to Ban Salt
One New York assemblyman's interpretation of the average New York restaurant kitchen.
If you thought the Mayor's voluntary salt reduction initiative was lacking in dictatorial muscle, then Felix Ortiz may be your man. In the kind of sadly deranged move that could have made only by someone whose electrolytes are hopelessly out of whack, the New York assemblyman has introduced a bill that would ban salt from New York kitchens and impose a $1,000 fine on any chef or restaurateur for each individual violation. Nation's Restaurant News reported yesterday that Ortiz, a Democrat who's -- surprise! -- a longtime advocate of menu labeling, introduced the bill to give restaurant customers more control over the amount of salt they consume. Such a ban, Ortiz told NRN, would give consumers "the option to exercise healthier diets and healthier lifestyles." You know what else fosters a healthier lifestyle? Being treated like an adult who has the right to decide what to put in one's own damn mouth.
Tellingly, even the Center for Science in the Public Interest, which has long lobbied for sodium reduction in the American diet, isn't endorsing Ortiz's proposal. Hopefully, neither will anyone else with one wispy strand of common sense.
