Updated: Matzoh Price Watch

On the first of March, Fork in the Road instituted our matzoh price watch, in which we report the prices being charged for matzohs around town as Passover approaches. We've added more stores to the list, and eventually we'll be returning to all the stores to see if the prices have changed in a way that constitutes price gouging. Feel free to report the prices you find in your own supermarket.

Note: Prices are for packages up to and including one pound. We selected the plainest type of matzoh available, if there were several flavors for a single brand.

Conclusions so far: The spread in prices is amazing. You can pay as little as 19ȼ an ounce for Streit's (the locavore choice, made right on the Lower East Side), or as much as 34ȼ, nearly double the price. Generally, Israeli-imported matzohs are underselling those made in the United States, often at half price. On the other hand, one supermarket has chosen to treat the same brand as a luxury item, and charged much more than average for them. Stay tuned as we continue with our Matzoh Price Watch.
