Bartenders Will Drop $675 for Crash Course in Hard Shake by Japanese Master Kazuo Uyeda

Kazuo Uyeda: hard shaker.
While cocktailians (and cocktologists) around the city are gearing up for the Manhattan Cocktail Classic, a particular drink-slinging contingent is saving their pennies (67,500 of them) for Cocktail Kingdom's two-day Japanese Cocktail Technique workshop, to be held May 3-4 at the Maritime Hotel's Hiro Ballroom. The reason for the high anticipation (and price tag) is the fact that it will be led by master bartender Kazuo Uyeda, Japan's most famous barkeep and the inventor of the "hard shake."

The event will mark Uyeda's first appearance in New York and will coincide with the release of the English translation of his seminal tome, Cocktail Technique. Participants will learn not only about the hard shake, but also the fine art of making ice balls, stirring, and "developing the ability to concentrate." They'll also get to take home a fancy AG cobbler shaker, the kind Uyeda uses at his own bar in Tokyo, coyly named Tender Bar.
