Drastic Drop in Strawberry Prices Expected: Prepare to Get Busy
Blog Yum Sugar reports that strawberry prices are expected to drop dramatically within the next week, from a national average of $3.49 per pound to a just $1.25 per pound. The combined crop picked last week was apparently 80 million pounds, and that mass of juicy red fruit is expected to reach markets soon. The surplus is the result of delayed harvest in Florida due to the dramatic freeze that destroyed many citrus crops, causing strawberries to be harvested at the same time in both California and Florida. What to do with all the fruit? Make a no-bake strawberry pie, a strawberry shortcake, strawberry ice cream, a strawberry-rhubard pie, a strawberry daiquiri, or simply throw the cheap fruit at your friends.
