No bullshit: proper imperial pints at Washington Commons.

The chocolate lab is wagging its tail, but not because of the $2 off everything -- a rotating selection of beers on tap and a healthy whiskey list -- at Washington Commons in Prospect Heights. Or maybe that is the reason. The neighborhood bar is busy, but not obnoxiously so at 7 p.m. on a Wednesday night, an hour shy of the end of the 3-8 p.m. happy hour.

The 3 p.m. start seems to attract a fair share of schoolteachers, itching for their first drink of a long short day. This week, there's Guinness on tap ($4 after the discount), and a delightfully caramel-sweet McNeill's Tartan Export Scottish-style ale from Vermont (also $4, but for a 16-ounce pour instead of a 20-ounce for the Guinness). A regular is overheard grumbling about "bullshit places that serve 16-ounce pints of Guinness" instead of the "proper imperial pints" you get here, as another orders one of the stale pretzels, the only food offered, although you can often find people chowing down on Zaytoons or tacos they've ordered from nearby.

The music is DJed by an iPod; the flat screen TV airs obscure or beloved indie films. The backyard, filled with picnic tables occupied by an array of Brooklyn beardos and their Birkenstocked lady friends, nearly doubles the size of the bar.
