Hello, gorgeous.
The Scripps Network today announced the lineup for its new Food Network spin-off, the Cooking Channel, which will infiltrate living rooms beginning on May 31.

The New York Times has an extensive article examining the strategy behind the network's programming, and discovers that generally, they're shooting for "a little grittier, a little edgier, a little hipper," according to a network VP.

This in part means lots of shows starring Canadians, as well more shows about ethnic cuisine, reruns of Julia Child and The Galloping Gourmet, and food cultural studies with Mo Rocca.

Time will tell how the grittier-edgier-hipper strategy pays off, but in the meantime, we defer to the quote that Our Man Sietsema gave to the Times: "They should have packaged the thing as an international food channel and it would have made some sense," he said. "They are desperate."
