The Academy of American Poets Would Like to Get You Drunk

Drinking and writing: the most classic of cocktails.

April marks National Poetry Month and several of the city's cocktail bars and restaurants are celebrating with literarily-themed libations. The Academy of American Poets has enlisted bartenders from Back Forty, Savoy, PDT, Freemans, and Mayahuel to create tipples inspired by great scribes in an effort to encourage people to appreciate the two things for which poets are known best: the written word and the imbibed drink.

Throughout the month of April, over at PDT, you can get a Bobby Burns inspired by the Scottish poet Robert Burns, incorporating Benromach 12-Year-Old Scotch Whisky, Dolin Sweet Vermouth, and Benedictine, stirred and garnished with a lemon twist. Michael Cecconi has created The Pablo Neruda for Back Forty, made with Fino Sherry, Chilean Pisco, fresh lemon juice, and Maple Syrup, shaken and served in a rocks glass.

In the words of Dorothy Parker, who enjoyed a tipple or two at her Round Table and has more than a couple of famous drinking quotes attributed to her: "I'd rather have a bottle in front of me, than a frontal lobotomy." Cheers to that.
