Now with more vegans.
Looks like Starbucks is heeding the clarion call most recently trumpeted by the food scientists at Chipotle: it's introducing vegan frappuccinos.

Per the vegan blog Quarry Girl, the soy-based vegan fraps are already available in Los Angeles, and Starbucks will make a nation-wide roll-out on May 5.

According to an e-mail sent to the blog by a Starbucks manager, making vegan frappuccinos goes something like this:

"The old method to make them used a base that contained dairy, but the new way you basically add a thickening syrup to base of milk/ flavour syrups/ coffee depending on the drink, so as long as the drink is made with soy it's vegan. The coffee and creme frappuccino bases are vegan, however, the light one is not-- and all the other inclusions and toppings are vegan except for whip (duh) and caramel drizzle."

A commenter on the site who claims to work at Starbucks clarified that May 4 is the official launch date, and that baristas will use a new dedicated blender pitcher used only for soy milk. It will be pink.

All of which means that vegans will soon have the option of drinking dessert through a straw, just like the rest of us.
