Open & Closed: Say Hello to The Commodore, Goodbye to The Dog Ear Tavern

Restaurants and bars, they come and they go. Here are a few making their debuts and bowing out this week.

The Doghouse Saloon on the Lower East Side has closed temporarily for renovations. The bar is expected to reopen June 1 with a Grand Reopening party.

The Dog Ear Tavern, which opened a year ago around the corner for the Ear Inn, has already closed and is now called Samalita's.

Cariño, a new Mexican spot in Williamsburg opened by former Bonita staffers, has opened and the fish tacos are already earning praise.

The Commodore, the new spot occupying the old Black Betty space, has opened serving comfort food and summery cocktails.

Hot Bird, named for the old chicken shop still advertised in giant letters on several Prospect Heights buildings, is a new bar specializing in draft beer and Southern-style cocktails.

The HorseBox, which is apparently a new sports bar, has arrived on Avenue A, near 14th Street.

Popbar is the latest popsicle specialist to launch. Expect homemade gelato on sticks in 25 rotating flavors that can be covered in various tasty toppings. [Grub Street]
