Jersey Peaches Roll in Early
That record-breaking hot spell in April is yielding juicy dividends. This weekend, yellow peaches showed their fuzzy faces for the first time, arriving a good week or two earlier than usual. 
"They're very early this year," says Pegi Adam, of the New Jersey Peach Promotion Council. "The hot spell in April caused the blossoms to set, and we think it's going to be a good year for peaches."
The peach season usually hits in mid-July and runs into September; August is its peak, when the most varieties are available. "The earliest variety of our peaches is Desiree," says Adam. "Which is shaping up to be one of the best crops in years. It's a yellow-flesh peach, very juicy."
New Jersey is the fourth-largest peach-producing state, home to about 150 peach farmers, some of whom you can find at the greenmarkets around town.
